In the beginning of this chapter we meet Ronald A. Franz. Chris was trying to get a ride to his current camp location a few miles out of HO My God hot springs. Ronald A. Franz gave Chris a ride and quickly became attached to him. Ronald was a lonely old man; he had lost his family and was even pushed to drinking. The introduction of Chris into his life was a warm light in his lonely heart. Franz was worried about Chris, relating him to his own son who he had lost years ago. Chris told him he was ok, and that he did not need any protecting. When Chris parted Ronald near the end of this chapter, he left a big hole in his hart. Chris Mccandless left sent him a letter encouraging Ron to let go of his rooted life and live on the land. Ron took this advice to hart and moved out of his home and bought a nice trailer, living out in the wild.
